MacKinnley Colgan

Welcome to 2C.

My name is MacKinnley Colgan. This is my second year in my dream career as an elementary school teacher. Last year, I had the opportunity to teach grade 3 at A.E Bowers Elementary School; it was a wonderful year of laughter, growth, and learning.

I am very excited to be at Windsong Heights School this year! I am an open and honest person who loves children. I value the partnership between parent and teacher, and am excited to be your teammate this year! I spend time getting to know each amazing unique student in my class and consider it an honor to walk beside them through this stage of their learning journey.

I grew up on a hobby farm 35 minutes outside of Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. It was there that I discovered my love of animals and being in nature.

Ever since I was in kindergarten, I have known that teaching was my calling. At age five you could find me holding school for my stuffed animals and younger brother. I have always loved to learn and found I love to teach what I learned to others even more. Being witness to an "aha!" moment is such a remarkable feeling.

My mom is an educational assistant, through her I learned my love of the unique nature of brains. I found that her influence drew me into the wonderful world of special needs education and I quickly made it my passion to learn about the diverse nature of the human brain and its ways of experiencing the world.

I moved to Edmonton immediately after high school to attend 5 years of post-secondary at Concordia University of Edmonton. I obtained my Bachelor of Arts Degree with a major in Sociology and a minor of French, as well as my Education Degree specializing in Early Elementary Education. During those years, I worked as an in-home and community support worker with children and adults of various ages and abilities. I loved getting to know the families and people I worked closely with during these years. These experiences are what lead me to adopt flexible seating and mindfulness within my classroom.

Here's to an amazing year filled with laughter, learning, and fun!
